A column (not shown) mounted on the base 12 and carrying the portion 15 is rotatable and vertically adjustable by motor means (not shown) and is protected by bellows 14. An hydraulic cylinder device 19 is provided for moving the arm longitudinally. The flame cutter 25 is supported by the piston-rod 23 of a cylinder 22, the whole mounting being rotatable about the axis of the rod at 24. The cutter is releasably held in a collar vertically adjustable by a gear drive via a knob 26. Gear drives 27 and 44 enable the cutter to swivel about axes respectively transverse and parallel to the axis of the arm 18. A spindle 29 extending from the worm gear 44 is axially adjustable. The table 13 has adjustable work supports 40 and a single motor may drive the table and a cam drum 36 for automatically controlling other drives of the apparatus. A casting 38, as shown with evenly spaced sprues 42 is clamped to the table with its axis of-symmetry coincident with that of the table and the table is rotated to align a sprue with the cutter 25. The cutter is coarsely adjusted by raising or lowering support portion 15 and finely adjusted by means of controls 27, 28, 30 and 44. The cutter is ignited under the control of valves 31, 32 and 45 and moved into cutting position by the cylinder 22. The table is rotated slowly during cutting. The cutter is withdrawn and the table speeded up between cuts under the control of the cam drum or a manual control panel 35. The cutter may finally be operated horizontally along the surface 43. A second table 13 may be provided for setting up further castings while cutting is proceeding. The hydraulic cylinders may have locks to hold a piston at a selected setting even when pressure fails. The fine adjustment may be controlled automatically and the cam drum may be replaced by a tape control. More than two tables and more than one cutter may be provided.
